"Health plan options" -
Vineyard Gazette
Massachusetts residents with health insurance through the Commonwealth Care Health Insurance Program (Commonwealth Care) can change their health plan for any reason between June 3 and June 22, according to Network Health, one of the five local health plans with a Commonwealth Care product.

"Misplaced blame placed on insurers" -

Russell Kopp, Network Health's vice president of finance, wrote a Letter to the Editor responding to a Boston Globe op-ed on the amount of money that health plans spend on administration. Kopp cites Network Health uses 93 cents of every dollar on direct care for the plan's low- to moderate-income members, with the remaining seven cents directed to administration.

People will always get sick - meaning the hiring situation is healthy at insurance companies such as Network Health. The Medford-based nonprofit is hiring in operations, customer service, information technology, administration and medical management. The company also relocated its headquarters to Station Landing in Medford to “provide space for our continued growth,” said its president, Christina Severin.

The state reported in a news release that Commonwealth Care members can choose from five insurance carriers, although not all five plans are available in all parts of the state. In the Worcester area, Commonwealth Care plans are available from four carriers, including Network Health.

The Martha's Vineyard Hospital intends to drop its deal with one of its current Commonwealth Care providers on July 1. The Vineyard hospital makes its case for the change; a new deal with Network Health will make it easier to refer patients to its preferred, non-partner hospitals in Boston.

Some 1,500 lower-income Vineyard residents face the prospect of having to find new health insurance because the Martha's Vineyard Hospital has determined its current insurer is not directing enough patients to its affiliated hospitals in Boston. To date, Network Health has been the only other provider of this type of care.

Holding the line on government spending without reducing benefits or increasing cost-sharing for members, the state-subsidized Commonwealth Care program recently unanimously agreed to keep premium rates and base enrollee contributions flat for next year, and expanded the number of plans taking part in the program from four to five.
